Don’t try and fool the moving services
I did and I lost. These guys are strong on negotiating contracts and finding extras and weak on providing moving services. In the end I guess I paid a little extra over what I would have paid had I been honest upfront. Here’s my list of lies. Well, I didn’t exactly lie, I just never told the whole truth… I forgot to mention that the new apartment was a fourth floor walk-up. Moving services’ reaction? We have never ever carried stuff up four floors of stairs. In fact we have never heard of a 4 storey walk-up before. That’s extra. The new building is in a no-parking zone. Moving services’ reaction? This is the only street in New York City with a no parking zone. That’s extra.
Stairs are minimum width and the piano didn’t get around the corners. Moving services’ reaction? Piano? What piano? That’s extra. Hauling piano up on pulleys and bringing it in through the window is the mother of all extras. King size double bed had to go up on the outside pulleys as well. Moving services’ reaction? Good thing we decided to bring the pulleys otherwise you would have to pay for a return trip to base to get it. Believe me, these guys are good!
